How To: Easy Multiple Domain WordPress Blog Hosting!

  (by )

Ever wanted to have multiple blogs using multiple domains but all pointed at just one single WordPress installation, and without using WordPress MU?

It’s now really easy to do! All you need are a few domains, a hosting account, WordPress and the WP-Hive plugin!

What is WP-Hive?

WP Hive is a WordPress Plugin that allows multiple WordPress sites to run on a single installation.

It is intended to be used in a multi-site, single administrator environment and is for the WordPress administrator who manages many sites and is looking for a way to synchronize the plugins, themes, and files for all their sites with ease.

There are many advantages of doing this:

  • Only 1 copy of WordPress to update
  • Only 1 template needed across all sites
  • Only need to remember 1 admin login/password

Here’s how to do it, you should be up and running in 2 minutes!

1) Add your domains into cPanel

Login to cPanel, click ‘Parked domains’ and park all your domains so they all point at /public_html/

2) Install WordPress

In cPanel, click ‘Softaculous’, click ‘WordPress’, click ‘Install’, on the next page you want to make sure that WordPress is installing to the main domain of your cPanel account and that the ‘Install folder’ box is blank. This will ensure that WordPress is installed to your /public_html/ folder.

3) Install WP-Hive

  • Login to WordPress Admin (mydomain.com/wp-admin)
  • Click ‘Plugins’
  • Click ‘Add New’
  • Search for ‘WP-Hive’
  • Click ‘Install’
  • Click ‘Activate’

4) Configure WP-Hive

  • You’ll see a WP-Hive menu at the bottom of WordPress admin, click it so it opens.
  • Click ‘Add New’
  • On the next page you’ll be asked some questions:
  • Domain name – enter the domain you want to add, ie ‘domain.com’
  • Sub directory – enter ‘/’
  • Prefix – this needs to be different for each WordPress install you have, I just use the first 3 letters of my domain… so ‘dom_’ would be okay.
  • Hit ‘Save changes’
  • You will be given a new WordPress admin login/pass, you can login to this new WordPress install and change the admin login/pass to the same as your master site so it’s easy to remember. (Obviously do please use a hard to guess password).

Repeat step 4 for every domain you want to add, soon you’ll have hundreds of blogs in your Hive all using the same WordPress installation!

This is why I like WordPress so much, every time I say that’s enough with the plugins, I come across a new interesting one and use it. 🙂
Nice and simple written tutorial, thanks.
