Tutorial on How to Install Vanilla Forums!

  (by )

Vanilla Forums is an application designed to help users create a dynamic online community with a modern appearance and great functionality.  With the help of Installatron, one of our auto-installers, this forum application is quick and easy to install.  To make the installation process even simpler, I’ve  created a tutorial with directions and screenshots to help you through every step of installing Vanilla Forums!

Login to your cPanel and type “installatron” in the find box.  The Installatron icon will appear to the right of the box.

Click on the Installatron icon.  On the next page, type “vanilla forums” in the search box and hit enter.

On the next page, click the “install this application” button.

On the next page, you will need to configure your Vanilla Forums installation using the install wizard.

The Location section allows you to choose where you install Vanilla Forums.  If you have multiple domains in your cPanel account, then you will need to select the desired domain from the Domain dropdown.

If you want people to be able to access your Vanilla Forums installation by simply visiting your domain name, then leave the Directory field blank.  However, if you want people to access your Vanilla Forums installation by visiting a URL like www.yourdomain.com/forum, then you should type forum in the Directory field.

The Version section allows you to choose which version of Vanilla Forums to install, accept the license agreement, and manage automatic updates.

You can select the version of Vanilla Forums you would like to install by using the Version dropdown.  We recommend always installing the latest version, as it will offer the most security and features.  If you want the admin area of your Vanilla Forums site to use a language other than English, select your desired language from the Language dropdown.

Next, you can review the license agreement for Vanilla Forums.  If you don’t want to accept the license agreement, then you will not be able to install Vanilla Forums.

Next, you can manage your Automatic Update settings.  We recommend automatically updating to new minor versions and security releases, as this will help keep your Vanilla Forums installation secure from hackers.

The Settings section allows you to customise your Vanilla Forums installation.

You can enter the username, password, and email address for the admin area of your Vanilla Forums site.  Please do not use “admin” or “administrator” as the username for the admin area of your site, as this will make your installation vulnerable to hackers.  Also, please choose a strong password for the admin area of your site to help make your website as secure as possible.  Make a note of your username and password; you will use these details to login to the admin area of your site.  The admin email address for your site is where all messages regarding updates, password resets, etc. will be sent.

Next, enter the title for your website.  This information will appear on your website, web browsers, and in search engine results.  You can update this information at a later date via the admin area of Vanilla Forums.

The Advanced section allows you to choose whether or not you want to manage databases, email notifications, default backup locations, and automatic backups yourself.  Unless you are familiar with managing these settings, we recommend choosing to allow Installatron to automatically manage these settings for you.

Once you’ve configured your settings, click the Install button to begin installing Vanilla Forums.

Once you’ve successfully installed Vanilla Forums, you will be able to login to the admin area of your site by clicking the admin URL.
