How To Change Your WordPress Site's Domain

Posted 11th June, 2014 by Aliysa

For whatever reason, you may want to change the domain or URL of your WordPress site. As long as the domain you want to change it to is added to your Tsohost account, it’s easy to do this, even if you no longer have access to the WordPress admin area.

If you have access to the WordPress admin area, navigate to Settings > General.

WordPress admin URL

You’ll see two addresses: one is the WordPress Address (URL), known as the home setting, and the other is the Site Address (URL), known as the site URL setting. The home setting is the address people type into their browser to reach your site, and the site URL setting is the address where your WordPress core files reside (usually these values will be the same, unless you want your WordPress install to be in a subdirectory).

Remember, once you’ve changed these values, the URL of your WordPress login screen will change, so you need to be extra careful and ensure you enter these URLs correctly, which includes adding http:// to your domain in the URL, and not entering a trailing /. And this leads me to the next how-to.

If you can’t access the WordPress admin area - you may have made a mistake or the domain has expired - you can change the home and URL settings manually through editing wp-config.php.

To do this, you need to add two lines of code to your wp-config.php file, which can be accessed from File Manager on the Cloud, or through FTP:

wp-config code domain URL

‘yoursite.com’ should be the new location of your site. Note: after implementing this method you can no longer change these values from General Settings in the WordPress admin.
