Recently, Smashing Magazine wrote a great article called Effective Twitter Backgrounds:  Examples and Current Practices, which contained tons of useful information on how to create a Twitter background that helps you communicate what you, your business, or your organisation is all about.  Inspired by this article, I started searching the web for more resources on Twitter backgrounds, and I found some amazing sites that I wanted to share with you!

TwitterBackgrounds.com offers tons of cool (and free!) Twitter backgrounds, as well as a Twitter Background Creator (for $4.99) which allows you to personalise your background with your own images (not a bad option if you don’t want to do it yourself).  For $99, you can get a custom Twitter background in three days–check out their custom design portfolio to help you decide if it’s worth the price.

TwitBacks enables you to create your very own Twitter Background in only a couple of minutes.  Just choose from over 80 background designs, add links to your blog, website, and social media profiles, and brand the background with your photo or your company’s logo.  Don’t want to create your own Twitter background?  TwitBacks’ will create a custom background for you–just contact them with the specifics, and they’ll give you a quote on a Twitter background designed to meet your needs!

TwitterBackgroundImages.com has a decent collection of free backgrounds for Twitter, and they also offer free Twitter icons and instructions on how to create your own background image.  Don’t have the time to do it yoruself?  You can purchase a customized background for $67–take a look at their previous work to help you figure out if it’s worth the money.

twitrounds has loads of free Twitter backgrounds, and they also offer custom backgrounds for $79.  twitrounds doesn”t have a portfolio of their custom designs on their site, but they will give you a full refund if, after three revisions, you don’t like their work.

Twitter Backgrounds Gallery showcases interesting backgrounds from designers all around the world, as well tips and resources to help you create a unique background of your own.  Already have a cool Twitter background that you wanted added to the gallery?  Submit it, and, if they think it’s good enough, they’ll post it on their site.   Twitter Backgrounds Gallery regularly has contests where talented designers create a background for a band or organisation, and the  winners (chosen by the public) receive various prizes and rewards.

Free Twitter Designer is a great site for those of you who want a quick and easy way of creating a custom Twitter background.  Simply select an existing theme, add text, shapes, and images, and change the colours of the sidebar, text, background, and links.  Then, just generate your Twitter background and save the file or export it directly to Twitter.  Free Twitter Designer is a fun tool, it’s really easy to use, and it’s completely free!
