If you want to change the favicon on your Magento site, then this post is for you! For those of you who may not know, a favicon is the small image displayed next to a site’s URL in your web browser, your bookmarks, as well as the tabs in your browser.If you haven’t already changed the favicon for your Magento store, then you probably have a Magento logo for your site’s favicon. In order to make your website reflect your company’s brand, it’s important to change your favicon to an image that represents your business. Thankfully, it’s easy to create a favicon, as well as upload it to your Magento store. I’ve provided step-by-step instructions to make this process as easy as possible, so just follow the steps below to change your favicon!
To make a favicon for your website, I recommend using a favicon generator. There are tons of different favicon generators online, and they’re all pretty much the same. You can use favicon.co.uk, or any other favicon generator, to make your favicon.
Simply find an image, such as your company’s logo, and upload it to the favicon generator. Favicon’s are 16×16 pixels, so choose 16×16 for the size. Then, just click ‘Generate Favicon’, and you’ll get to see a preview of your favicon. If it doesn’t look right, then just tweak the image in a photo editing application until you get the favicon you want.
Once you’re happy with the image, just download the favicon and save it to your computer. Now that you have your favicon, you’ll need to find the path for your favicon.
To upload your favicon to your Magento site, you need to know where your favicon should go. Favicons always have the file name of ‘favicon.ico’, so just view the source for your site’s home page, and look for these two lines of code near the top:
<link rel=”icon” href=”http://www.yourdomain.com/skin/frontend/default/default/favicon.ico” type=”image/x-icon” />
<link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”http://www.yourdomain.com/magento/skin/frontend/default/default/favicon.ico” type=”image/x-icon” />
Now that you know where your favicon file should go, you need to upload the favicon to your site.
Open up your FTP client and connect to your server. Then, just browse to the path outlined above; once you’ve found the location of the file, simply upload the favicon you created earlier, and be sure to overwrite the existing favicon file. Now, you just need to check to make sure Magento site is displaying your new favicon.
Visit your site and refresh the page: you should now see your new favicon. If you can’t see your new favicon, then clear your cache and check your site again.
Changing your Magento site’s favicon isn’t difficult, but a lot of users actually overlook this important step. While Magento is an excellent ecommerce application, you want your site to showcase your company’s logo, not Magento’s.
